The Timothy C. Averill Debate Education Fund is proud to announce that it has given nearly $70,000 in grants and scholarships from 2005-2017  to promote debate at Manchester Essex Regional High School as well as in the greater Boston area. Typical grants included the following, each given annually:
  1. A  Challenge Grant  to the families of debaters and members of the school community to assist with the MERHS Debate and Speech Team’s travel to national final debates and to provide a “rainy day” fund for unexpected expenses during the year.
  2. At least $2000 was allocated for scholarships to students attending Summer Debate Institutes. These students will be active members of the MERHS Debate and Speech Team next year.
  3. At least $2800 was given in scholarships to graduating seniors at MERHS who had made a significant contribution to the debate and speech program during their time on the team.
  4. A travel grant of $1500 was given to the Boston Debate League so that its teams  could attend National Speech and Debate Association Nationals. The TADEF has been instrumental from the beginning in encouraging the development of the urban debate program, and this year our students competed with students from Boston in a variety of venues.

The TADEF is proud that all monies contributed to the fund have been retained and that all grants and scholarships are the result of interest, dividends, and growth of the investment. We have raised and preserved $150,684. During the years since the fund was established in 2005, it has awarded over $70,000 in grants and scholarships to benefit students in debate at MERHS and in the region.
